Organic farming is an agricultural process that uses biological fertilizers and pest controls acquired from animal or plant waste without using any kind of environmental damaging chemical pesticides or synthetic fertilizers.

Multilayer organic farming

Multilayer organic farming is a technique for growing multiple crops in the same fields in different layers below the ground and above the surface of ground at the same time using only the biological fertilizers and pest & disease control.

It is the technique of producing two or more crops on the same plot of land at the same time throughout the same growing season. Multiple cropping through this techniques enables in enhancing the land’s yield with different variety of vegetables with reduced resource requirement, reduced weeds generation and reduced risk of pests and diseases to crops, which ultimately results to enhanced earning through small piece of agricultural land.

The technique involves growing plants at different heights above the soil surface and also using different root zones below the surface. One crop of root plants is planted below soil, crops like ginger and turmeric, and multiple crops of different heights above the soil surface, like green leafy vegetables at first layer, food plants as second layer, vein plants as third layer and fruit plants at fourth layer. The season wise crop combination is worked-out depending upon their different light requirements, different nutritional requirements and different in harvesting period also.

Through this technique we can integrate crops and trees with varying degrees of sun-light intensity ensuring 100% cover to the soil with diverse plants and trees. This enhances the soil biome, carbon sequestration, water retention capacity of soil, nutrients availability and year-round availability and year-round income to farmers.

At the same time, depending upon the season during a year, we can go for 2 layers (min.) to 3 or 4 or 5 layers (max.)
